Local AI for your business: what hardware does your own LLM need?
Choose what you want to do and see how much graphics memory, main memory and disk space it takes, what it costs to buy or rent, and which models to start with. Everything is calculated in your browser, with honest limits, including where the cloud is the better choice.
The calculator
What do you want to run locally?
Pick a use case and get an answer: which model class is suitable, how much memory it needs and what that means for hardware. The figures are guidelines and honestly assessed, including where the honest answer is «stick with the cloud». Everything is calculated in your browser. Prefer to configure it yourself? Use expert mode below.
Each use case has its own in-depth page with examples, steps and FAQ (in German): Text & chat, Transcription, Images, Analysing documents, Internal search, Excel & analyses, Programming, AI agents and Video.

Getting started: the commands to copy
Install Ollama (free, ollama.com), then in the terminal:
The ratings follow our internal Ollama hardware matrix (Q4 planning values; figures as of September 2026, no new measurement; Qwen3.5, Gemma 4, Mistral and Qwen3-Coder added from the Ollama library in October 2026). On a Mac the model and the system share the same memory, so the RAM figure is what counts there. The models run e.g. via the free tool Ollama; «14b» in the name means 14 billion parameters, roughly the size of the model's brain. The CHF ranges are planning values, spot-checked on 17 October 2026 against Swiss retail prices for graphics cards and the rental prices of an EU provider and a GPU cloud; they are not quotes. Expert mode: configure model, quantisation and context yourself
The «people working at the same time» slider scales the context memory per person, which is exactly the extra requirement in team use; the people also share the response speed. Without a suitable graphics card the model runs from main memory, considerably slower; on a Mac the shared memory is what counts.
Implement it with us
What we can take on for you
The calculator tells you what is needed. If you would rather not set it up yourself, or want a second opinion before buying, we take on these steps. The initial consultation is free, in German or English.
Setup on your hardware
We set up the right model with a chat interface on a computer or server you already have: with sign-in in front, access for the team and a backup. Your data stays in-house.
Accompanied two-week test
Three real tasks from your day-to-day work, two weeks of logging, then a clear evaluation: local is enough, local with better hardware, or the cloud remains better. All three are good results, because they prevent a bad purchase.
Advice before you buy
Before you buy or rent hardware, we look at your tasks, data volumes and data protection requirements and tell you which tier is enough. Even when the honest answer is «no hardware of your own».
One click copies your request and your current calculator result into the enquiry form below. You can change both there.
Why local?
When your own language model pays off, and when it doesn't
Local AI is not an end in itself. It pays off when at least one of these reasons applies, and usually not otherwise.
Data protection and professional secrecy
Customer files, personnel records, patient data, client mandates: whatever falls under data protection law or professional secrecy does not belong unchecked in a third party's cloud. A locally set-up data path can avoid transfers to model providers, provided the interface, add-ons and backups are checked as well.
Independence
Cloud providers change prices, limits and models on their schedule, not yours. A local model keeps running for as long as you want, in the state you have tested.
Predictable costs at high volume
Anyone sending thousands of documents through a model every day pays per request in the cloud. Locally, you pay for the hardware once. The volume at which this tips is a calculation, not a matter of belief.
And when the cloud is better
If you need top quality for demanding tasks, use it rarely, or nobody is to look after the hardware, a cloud model is the simpler and often better choice. We say so in the consultation, too.

Frequently asked questions
FAQ: local AI in SMEs
Is a local language model as good as ChatGPT?
That depends on the model, the task and the tools used. A local model can be enough for document analysis, internal search or drafting texts. Demanding tasks may need other models or more computing power. Compare quality, failure cases and response time using representative documents; a blanket ranking of local versus cloud does not help.
Why should an SME run a language model locally?
The most common reason is data protection: customer data, personnel data or documents under professional secrecy should not pass through a third party's cloud. Add to that independence from providers' price and product changes, and predictable costs, because there are no fees per request after the purchase. If none of these requirements apply, a cloud model is usually the simpler choice.
Do I really need a graphics card?
No. Smaller models also run from main memory, on ordinary computers via the CPU and particularly well on a Mac, whose memory is shared with the graphics unit. Then RAM counts instead of graphics memory, but the answers come considerably more slowly. For productive use with several users there is rarely a way around a graphics card with enough memory.
May I use open models commercially?
The licence of the specific model and variant decides. Qwen3 14B, for example, is under Apache 2.0, Llama 3.3 under its own community licence. FLUX.1 dev has a non-commercial licence; commercial use of the model cannot be inferred from the free download. Running the model and using generated images must be checked separately.
Can I run ChatGPT locally on my computer?
A local model is not a locally installed ChatGPT. Examples of downloadable models are Qwen3 and Llama, for instance with Ollama as the runtime. Which tasks succeed has to be tested with the specific model. Locally installed tools can also use cloud functions; what counts is the data path actually set up. More on our page about the local ChatGPT alternative (in German).
Which graphics card do I need for Ollama?
To start with models of up to 8 billion parameters, a card with 8 GB of graphics memory is enough (e.g. RTX 4060 class). 12 to 16 GB is comfortable for most SME tasks, 24 GB for larger models and agents. A Mac uses its shared memory; there, 16 GB is the entry point and 32 GB is comfortable. Our buying guide by VRAM class (in German) goes deeper into the choice of hardware.
Is my laptop enough for local AI?
For small models (up to 8 billion parameters) usually yes: they run from main memory even without a dedicated graphics card, noticeably more slowly. MacBooks with 16 GB of memory or more are surprisingly capable here. For productive continuous use or larger models there is hardly a way around a computer with a proper graphics card or a rented GPU server. Our Mac buying guide (in German) sorts out the memory classes.
How fast is local AI?
That depends on the model architecture, quantisation, context length, hardware and simultaneous use. The calculator estimates memory, not response speed. Measure the time to the first answer and the processing time on your own task before buying hardware.
Can the AI be trained on my company data?
Usually that is the wrong question: what most businesses want is not retraining of the model (fine-tuning) but internal search. The model gets access to your documents when answering and quotes from them without being changed. That is cheaper, more up to date and can be undone at any time. Real fine-tuning only pays off in special cases, such as a fixed writing style or technical jargon in large volume.
How good is local AI in German?
The model families listed here support multilingual tasks. Whether summaries, document fields and Swiss technical terms are processed correctly enough has to be checked with your own texts. Answers that read convincingly can be factually wrong; fixed review criteria remain necessary.
Does local AI need an internet connection?
Downloaded models can work offline with a local runtime set up for this. Cloud models, web search, external interfaces and some add-on functions still need a connection. In Ollama, cloud functions can be switched off. Also check the interface used, extensions and outgoing connections.
Is local AI compliant with data protection law (Swiss FADP / GDPR)?
Local operation alone does not prove data protection compliance. It can avoid transfers to model providers if the user interface, connections to other systems, remote access and backups are set up accordingly. Data protection law still applies to the processing of personal data. Data paths, access protection and the requirements of the specific use must be checked in the project.
